Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. In her early years, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to associations with words. Ford's interest in acting began as a child. She was a part of at the National Youth Theatre. She got into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a week she decided it wasn't for her. Ford then applied to be a student for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but, by that time she was already making her TV debut on an episode from 1991 from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in such programs on television including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London Burning. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre has led to her joining The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate started to get noticed because of her stand-up comedic performances in 1996.
